Police raid black spot, arrest 88 suspects in Gombe

Gombe, Oct. 19, 2012 (NAN) The Police in Gombe State said on Friday that 88 persons had been arrested, following a joint raid with soldiers in Angwan Uku area of Gombe Town on Friday.



Briefing newsmen in Gombe on Friday, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Sule, said the raid was carried out around 4.30 a.m. on Friday.



“The command was called to assist the military on joint raid at Angwan Uku area of Gombe Town and we smashed a criminal gang, arresting 88 notorious criminals."



The joint team also recovered three AK 47 rifles, 163 live ammunition and 24 mobile phones, he added.



The commissioner said that the team recovered a butt of military rifle, 34 Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs), chargers and two sambwa water used for IEDs.



Asked if there was casualty, Sule said there were minimal injuries on the part of the security personnel.



He said the discovery of the devices had confirmed that the criminals were a terrorist group.



Sule said the suspects were already charged to court and subsequently remanded in prison.



He advised residents of the state capital to remain calm, saying the command was doing everything possible to secure lives and property.



“I implore them to trust the police and other security agencies by giving us useful information that will lead to the arrest of criminals so as to make the entire state crime-free.



“Any information given will be treated with utmost confidentiality, they should not fear that their information will be divulged,” he said (NAN)
