Yakowa to sack erring solid waste contractors

Kaduna, Sept. 29, 2012 (NAN) Gov. Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State on Saturday threatened to sack contractors handling the evacuation of solid waste in the state over poor performance.
Yakowa told newsmen in Kaduna after going round the city to assess the conduct of the state monthly sanitation exercise that the government would review the performance of the contractors and sack those found wanting.
The governor noted the heaps of refuse dumped on major high ways of the city, saying, “erring solid waste contractors will be sacked irrespective of their connection because they are not fulfilling their part of the contract agreement”.
Yakowa also noted that in spite of the huge amount being spent on waste management, the city has remained dirty.
He directed all commissioners to work with the Ministry for Environment to develop ways through which the state would attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on sanitation.
He ordered the ministry to seal-off ``companies, industries, shops, offices and houses that fail to maintain best environmental sanitation practices''.
The governor warned traders along Ahmadu Bello way to desist from defacing the high way, saying, ``Ahmadu Bello way is a memorial route to all Kaduna residents and it should be cleaned as much as possible.”
He observed that the various government ministries and departments were also dirty and directed all commissioners to ensure that the situation was changed.
Also speaking on the exercise, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Zakaria Shamaki, blamed the nonchalant attitude of residents for the poor sanitary condition of the city.
Shamaki lamented that the residents hardly observe the monthly sanitation, adding: “Some women even openned their shops during the exercise.”
He warned that environmental defaulters would henceforth be sanctioned, while the sack of erring contractors would commence from the next sanitation day. (NAN)
