PDP commends Jonathan for migating impact of flooding

Abuja, Oct. 10, 2012 (NAN) The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for taking `firm and reassuring’ steps to mitigate the impact of flooding across affected states in the country.
Mr Olisa Metuh, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, gave the commendation in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.
He also hailed the president for steps taking to forestall further threat to the nation.
He particularly commended Jonathan for releasing N17.6 billion for the flood victims and for setting up the National Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation.
He said the committee would assist in raising funds for the post-impact rehabilitation of the affected victims.
Metuh said it was reassuring that Jonathan and his vice would tour the affected states and called on the members of the committee to justify the confidence reposed in them by government.
He said the committee set up by the president had completed its interim impact assessment of the flood ravaged states.
``Based on the committee’s report, the government energised its agencies to offer immediate relief,’’ he said.
Metuh expressed satisfaction that the president collaborated with the leadership of the National Assembly and Governors of affected states to confront the menace.
``Flood disasters are a global phenomenon but our peculiar challenges of development demand deeper insight and capacity which the president has demonstrated.
``We, therefore, commend him for the medium and long term measures being put in place to first ameliorate the suffering of the affected Nigerian communities.’’
The PDP publicity secretary scribe also commended the president for steps being taken to permanently put under check the incidence of flooding in the future.
He called on relevant government agencies and Nigerians to brace up for the challenge of food shortages, which the impact of the flooding, might likely occasion in 2013.
Meanwhile, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, has resolved to complement Federal Government’s efforts to bring relief to flooded communities across the country.
In line with this, Alhaji Bamanga TuKur, the National Chairman of the party, would lead party leaders to affected states to share in the pains of the victims by offering additional assistance to them.
The NWC urged the three tiers of government as well as farmers to take measures to avert imminent food shortages on account of floods. (NAN)
