Lagos, Oct. 16, 2012 (NAN) Adeyemi Awopetu, Head, Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, University of Lagos (UNILAG), has bemoaned the decrepit state of the National Stadium, Lagos.

``Part of administration is maintenance. Now there is a ministry in charge of sports at the national level and at the state level. And there are facility managers in these places.
``Now, the facility managers are supposed to supervise these things and ensure that these sports facilities are maintained. If they are not doing their work, somebody should be made to answer for it.
``If you are employed to do a job and you are not doing it, there should be a way of checking whether you have done it and if you have not done it, there should be a way of reprimanding you if you don’t do it.”

Awopetu said that the low utilisation of the edifice was also responsible for the overgrown weed and the deterioration of its amenities.
He suggested that the maintenance of the stadiums in the country could equally be concession to private companies that could maintain them for a more efficient and effective use.
He also advised that the some offices of the ministry of sports should be located near the stadiums to ensure periodic maintenance. (NAN)
