Ilorin, Oct. 13, 2012 (NAN) The sponsors of the maiden Chief of Naval Staff Volleyball Championships holding in Ilorin have earmarked the sum of four million Naira for the tournament.
Dr Olatunde Morakinyo, a Vice-President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), disclosed this on Saturday in Ilorin while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to him, the championship will involve participants from all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), including military and para-military formations.
Morakinyo, who is also the head of the Technical Committee of the championships, said the tournament was being sponsored by the Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ola Ibrahim, who was the immediate past Chief of Naval Staff.
“Kwara was picked to host the championship by the sponsor to serve as his contribution to his state’s sports development.
“And to boost the competition, the NVBF has decided that talents discovered from this championship will form part of the national teams,” he said.
Morakinyo said the championships which begins this weekend is like home coming for the federation because Kwara had staged many volleyball championships in the past.
He solicited for more support of the state’s Sports Council, as well as an enhanced media coverage of the event.
The NVBF board member disclosed that Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed and the Chief of Defence Staff would grace the official closing ceremony of the seven-day sporting event which ends on Oct. 20.
He pledged that the federation would work hard to make the championships an annual event.
