Abuja, Oct. 19, 2012 (NAN) Oluyole Warriors of Ibadan and Plateau Peaks of Jos have secured promotion to the Atlantic and Savannah Conferences of the 2012/2013 NBBF/DSTV Premier Basketball League.
Both teams achieved the feat after winning their groups on Thursday in Abuja at the 2012 NBBF National Division One Championship.
The Ibadan-based Warriors upstaged the Nigerian Air Force Rockets in the final game of the Atlantic Conference group with 77-55 points.
Having lost 66-68 to the Rockets on Wednesday, the Ibadan team knew only a win would be sufficient for them after their Lagos-based opponents had secured seven points from their first three games.
The Warriors' better head-to-head then gave them the edge after both sides ended up with seven points from three wins and one loss in four games each.
In the Savannah Conference group, Plateau Peaks also left it till the final game by beating Benue Braves of Makurdi 69-62.
The Makurdi side had beaten them 76-70 on Wednesday but the victory was just enough for Peaks to snatch top place with seven points ahead of Braves which had six points.
The victory ensured the Plateau Peaks were returning to the top league from where they were relegated at the end of the 2010/2011 season.
Both Plateau Peaks and Oluyole Warriors will now replace the Defenders of Abuja and the Chariots of Lagos, which were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2011/2012 season.
The Division One Championship ends on Friday at Abuja National Stadium with the Warriors facing the Peaks in the match to determine the overall champions. (NAN)
