Duke harps on proper understanding of culture to promote peace

Abuja, Sept 21, 2012 (NAN) The Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Chief Edem Duke, has called for proper understanding of cultural differences to promote peace in the country.
Briefing newsmen on Friday in Abuja to mark the 2012 International Peace Day Celebration, Duke said that only sustainable peace could guarantee rapid development of the country.
The theme of the celebration is ``Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future``.
Duke, who was represented by Mrs Ibukun Odusote, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, urged Nigerians to reflect and evolve ways of restoring peace in the country.

``I therefore use this platform to urge every Nigerian, especially those who have been disenchanted with the nation, to sheath their swords.
``Down their tools and arms and think of how to contribute to peaceful co-existence, harmonious living and nation building.
``Let us work together to ensure that from today we shall begin to crave for sustainable development, sustainable peace and a secured future where everyone will aspire to greater heights without oppression. ‘’

He said the country was at the threshold of history in which the economy could not impact on the lives of the masses because of the security challenges.
The minister said that without security, no meaningful development could be achieved in the country.
According to him, there is need for collective approach to guarantee the enabling environment for the transformation agenda of the Federal Government to succeed.

``Our message to everyone is peace in our homes, in our schools, in our work places, in our places of worship and everywhere we find ourselves.
``With peace and hard work, we can make our country have sustainable development and be the great nation that God has destined us to be.’’

He announced plan by the ministry to train 5000 youth sin various aspects of tourism, adding that the exercise was aimed at reducing unemployment and engage the youth in productive ventures. (NAN)
